How it works

  1. Step one

    Plug it in

    The monitor makes its own hotspot on first power up. Join it from your phone, hand over your wifi details, and it is on the network.

  2. Step two

    Pick the plant

    Choose what is growing there and the watering threshold sets itself from our plant database. Blueberries and tomatoes want very different things.

  3. Step three

    Leave it to it

    Every monitor is calibrated here before it is packed, so the reading means something from the first minute. No dry point, no wet point, nothing to set.

The nerd of plant sensors

We will be honest, they are not the prettiest things in the garden. They are, however, the cleverest.

You do not need Home Assistant, and you do not need an account. Every monitor runs its own page on your home network, so any phone or laptop on your wifi can open it, see the reading and pick what is growing there. That is the whole product, working out of the box, free.

PlantSense runs on wifi rather than Bluetooth, which matters more than it sounds. Bluetooth sensors make you walk out to the plant and stand next to it to get a reading. Ours sits on your network and reports from wherever you are in the house.

If you do run Home Assistant, you are well catered for. A monitor is discovered automatically with no bridge and no cloud account, and every reading and status turns up as a normal entity to chart, automate or throw on a wall panel.

Every monitor is calibrated by us before it is packed, then weatherproofed and ready for the bed, so it turns up working. Plug it in, put the probe in the soil, and it gets on with it.

Built in Somerset, tested in real gardens

PlantSense started because a tomato bed kept getting watered on a schedule instead of on need. Shop bought meters gave a number with no context. A finger in the soil told you about the top inch and nothing about the roots.

So we built a monitor that arrives already calibrated, holds that calibration through power cuts, and reports in plain words rather than a colour coded dial you have to interpret.
